As part of Laterna magica 2011, Fotokino and the International Poster and Graphic Design Festival of Chaumont present an original exhibition of the work of American designer Ed Fella. Over fifty years of landmark work on typography and on the essence of the American visual landscape.
Through thousands of drawings, Polaroids, collages, posters… Ed Fella has been exploring American typography and landscape since the early 1960s, and has invented a genre whose singularity has earned him international recognition. His work is a permanent dialogue between art and design, and is part of an intricate lineage that starts with Art Nouveau, goes through Dada, surrealism, abstract expressionism, pop art, beat generation, psychedelic graphics… In Ed Fella’s work, these influences intersect, add up and mirror a multiplicity of possible meanings, readings and interpretations of each of his works. His work is made layer by layer, and then read, layer by layer.
